WIPO, WHO and WTO presented new research on access to medical technologies and innovation

The Directors General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), the World Health Organization (WHO) and the World Trade Organization (WTO) have presented the new edition of the Trilateral Study on Promoting Access to Medical Technologies and Innovation. Based on the first edition released in 2013, the study seeks to gain a deeper understanding of the interactions between the various fields of health, trade and intellectual property (IP) and their impact on medical innovation.

The study covers key determinants of access to medical technologies and innovation, including those in relation to drugs, vaccines and other medical technologies such as medical devices and diagnostics. The second edition draws practical lessons from the interactions between public health, IP and trade within the broader perspectives set by the human rights dimension of health and the Sustainable Development Goals.

The study reflects numerous important changes that have occurred since 2013. New topics covered include antimicrobial resistance and advanced health technologies. The revised edition provides an update on trends in innovation in the pharmaceutical sector, trade and tariffs on medical products. It also includes an updated overview of access to medical technologies worldwide and key provisions of regional trade agreements. In addition, the study takes into account amendments to the IP legislation.
