The Impact of Intellectual Property on China's Economic Development

The fourth issue of the journal «Intellectual Property in Belarus» published an article by Y. Nechepurenko (Head of scientific-innovation department of the institution «Research Institute of Physical and Chemical Problems» of the Belarusian State University, PhD in Chemical Sciences) and Alexei Sitkevich (Head of the Sector of Scientific, Technological and Innovative Development оf the Center of Innovation and Investment Policy, Institute of Economics of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus) «The Impact of Intellectual Property on China's Economic Development».

This article describes the experience of the People’s Republic of China in the field of establishing industrial property rights. It has been established that over the past 25 years there have been significant changes in the distribution of applications for patents for inventions and for the registration of industrial designs and trade marks across different regions of the world, with the main contribution to the global growth in applications coming from countries in the Asian region, namely China, which achieved the greatest success during this period. It confidently holds first place in the world in terms of the number of applications for patents for inventions, utility models and plant varieties, as well as the number of classes in trademark registration applications and the number of designs in applications for industrial design patents. It is concluded that intellectual property plays an important role in the development of the Chinese economy, and that increased expenditure on research and development generally leads to greater patent and invention activity and improved product competitiveness.
