The State Committee on Science and Technology of the Republic of Belarus was formed on November 30, 1993

In accordance with Resolution of the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Belarus No. 809 of November 30, 1993, the Committee on Science and Technology was established. On September 23, 1994, by Decree of the President of the Republic of Belarus No. 122 On Changing the Structure of the Central Government Bodies of the Republic of Belarus» the Committee on Science and Technology under the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Belarus was reorganized into the Committee on Science and Technology by joining it to the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Belarus.

Over time, a specialized structure was required for effective development of scientific and technical potential and successful implementation of innovations. Thus, on January 11, 1997, by the Decree of the President of the Republic of Belarus No. 30 «On the System of Republican Bodies of State Administration Subordinate to the Government of the Republic of Belarus» the Committee on Science and Technology of the Ministry of Education and Science was transformed into the State Committee on Science and Technology of the Republic of Belarus (SCST).

One of the key tasks of the SCST today is to create conditions for the development of scientific and technological, innovation and intellectual property spheres in Belarus. The Committee supports scientific research, provides assistance to scientific organizations and institutions, and stimulates innovation projects and technological modernization.

The primary result of the SCST's work as a regulator in the field of science and technology is the creation and improvement of the national innovation system of the Republic of Belarus. The Committee also develops and implements programs and projects in the field of science, technology and innovation, monitors and analyzes the state of scientific, production and innovation activities in the country. The important direction of SCST's work is interaction with international organizations for exchange of experience and joint studies.
