The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) released several new reports on the patent landscape, including analysis of generative artificial intelligence (AI) technology, the use of marine genetic resources, palm oil and microalgae for various products. Each of these reports is not only a description and expert analysis of a specific invention, but also a way to map in detail the technology itself or the product as a whole.

In the report on generative AI:

  • the prerequisites for the formation of generative AI are touched upon;

  • trends in the global development of patenting and research in generative AI are considered;

  • the main filing jurisdictions are identified;

  • patent trends in generative AI models are described;

  • the growth dynamics of patent families over the last few years is investigated;

  • patent trends in applications of generative AI are examined and its uses in building the patent landscape are identified;

  • concerns about the growing use of generative AI models and tools, ranging from copyright infringement and potential misuse to the risk of unnecessary job losses are outlined.

The report on the utilization of marine genetic resources is of interest to those involved in new developments in pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and cosmeceuticals, new foods and biotechnology tools. The document provides examples of research being conducted in a number of Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) countries.

The Palm and Palm Kernel Oil Utilization Report provides an overview of the global patent landscape for palm oil and palm kernel oil product utilization. This information is useful for researchers in the field of patenting vegetable oil production technologies and the utilization of waste products from this industry.

Two key documents on patent landscape construction - the Guidelines for Preparing Patent Landscape Reports and the Guide to Open Source Patent Analysis Tools - can also be found on the official WIPO website.
