On March 20, 1883, the Paris Convention for Industrial Property Protection (Paris Convention) was signed - the first multilateral international treaty, which laid down the basic principles of protection of inventions, industrial designs, utility models, trademarks and other intellectual property (IP) objects.

Today 179 states joined the Paris Convention.

Belarus became a party to the Paris Convention in April 1993. The appropriate decision was made under Ruling of the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Belarus No.141 of March 11, 1993, «On Succession of the Republic of Belarus in respect of International Agreements on the Protection of Industrial Property».

This international agreement was the first step in the efforts to help authors and developers secure worldwide protection for their intellectual works.

The Paris Convention for the first time formulated the basic concepts of the IP sphere, the principles of functioning of national systems of legal protection of IP and their interaction, the rights of authors, inventors and patent owners.

The full text of the Paris Convention is available on the official website of the National Center of Intellectual Property in the «Legislation» section. This section is constantly updated with the current normative legal acts in the field of IP.
