The Diplomatic Conference to Conclude and Adopt a Design Law Treaty was held in Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, from November 11 to 22, 2024.

The event was attended by representatives of Member States of the World Intellectual Property Organization, international intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations.


The delegation of the Republic of Belarus was represented by Maria Shmatova , Head of the Industrial Property Law and Treaties Division of the Legal and Human Resources Department of the National Center of Intellectual Property, who was elected by the Diplomatic Conference as one of the members of the Drafting Commission.

The Diplomatic Conference resulted in the adoption of the Riyadh Design Law Treaty (the Treaty) and the adoption of resolutions supplementing the Treaty.

The Treaty is aimed at harmonizing the national legislation of different States in the field of procedure requirements relating to the granting of legal protection for industrial designs.

Among the main provisions of the Treaty are the requirements for applications and the fixing of filing dates, as well as the obligation of Contracting Parties to provide for extensions of time limits and restoration of rights in applications and registrations of industrial designs.

The Treaty will enter into force three months after the depositing of instruments of ratification or accession by 15 Contracting Parties.
