The International Day of Commemoration and Dignity of the Victims of the Crime of Genocide and of the Prevention of this Crime takes place every year on 9 December. The UN General Assembly proclaimed this day in September 2015. The date is symbolic: on 9 December 1948, the UN adopted the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide.
In the Republic of Belarus, acting under the Constitution and the above-mentioned Convention, the government adopted the Law dated 5 January 2022 No. 146-Z В«On the Genocide of the Belarusian PeopleВ». Its purpose is to preserve the memory of the millions of Soviet citizens who suffered during the Great Patriotic War and the post-war years.
In April 2021, the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Republic of Belarus opened a criminal case regarding the genocide of the population of Belarus during the Great Patriotic War and the post-war years. The decision relied on evidence describing how atrocities by the German occupiers and their collaborators led to the deaths of millions of Belarusians and other people.
The National Center of Intellectual Property honors these tragic pages of history. For the past two years, it has hosted a photo exhibition dedicated to the genocide of the Belarusian people during the Great Patriotic War and to the heroism of Belarusians who fought for freedom from the German fascist invaders. The exhibition reminds visitors of the hardships and remarkable resilience of our ancestors, helping preserve this memory for future generations.
