On September 10-12, Minsk hosted the XIV International Forum «Transport and Logistics – 2024». Traditionally, within the framework of the Belarusian Transport Week, participants of plenary discussions, round tables and conferences discuss the situation in the transportation industry. The event was organized by Technics and Communications JSC.
On September 11, 2024, the International Scientific and Practical Conference В«Digital Transformation of Transport and Logistics Activities: Status and ProspectsВ» was held as part of the forum.
In the plenary part of the conference Aliaksandr Zayats, Deputy Director General of the National Center of Intellectual Property (NCIP), made a report on В«Certain Issues of Intellectual Property in Cross-Border Movement of Goods and ServicesВ».
In his report, Mr. Zayats focused on certain aspects that allow to develop and obtain additional guarantees in the implementation of business in the transport and logistics sector through the use of intellectual property tools.
One of the most common objects of intellectual property used in the transport sector is means of individualization, including trademarks: В«A trademark helps transportation companies stand out from their competitors. Currently, trademark protection can be obtained by filing an international application or by filing an application with the national patent officeВ».

Over the past 5 years, NCIP has received more than 800 applications for registration of trademarks under the national registration procedure, including those related to the class of transportation services, and more than 650 applications - to the class of vehicles provided for by the International Classification of Goods and Services.
The Deputy Director General of NCIP paid attention to the problems related to the use of musical works in transport and also outlined the ways to solve them: В«NCIP together with the Russian Copyright Society has carried out extensive work to resolve the issue of determining the territory of use of works in passenger transport (for example, in tourist buses), which, coming from one country, crosses the border of another country and continues to move on its territoryВ».
In addition, Aliaksandr Zayats explained how industrial design protection is related to the aesthetic qualities of vehicles and products: В«An industrial design is an important element of intellectual property that protects the appearance of products and emphasizes the aesthetic qualities of the product. In Belarus, as in most countries, it is necessary to register it in order to obtain protection under the lawВ».
В«Since 2019, more than 130 applications have been filed with NCIP for design patents relating to the class containing vehicles and lifting weights under the International Classification of Industrial Designs,В» said Deputy Director General of NCIP.
